Approximately 2000 years ago Korea was divided into three kingdoms:  Kogoryo, Paekgi and Silla.  The Silla kingdom sent a group of elite youths (called the Hwa Rang Dan) to China to study Buddhism and the fighting methods of the Tang Dynasty. Silla defeated the other two kingdoms and united Korea (668 AD) with China's help. Martial arts became very popular at this time.

With the occupation of Korea by Japan, the practicing of martial arts was restricted.  Many Korean martial artists took refuge in the mountains to preserve their art and practice secretly or chose to leave Korea.  Grandmaster Hwang Kee went to China to study Chinese martial arts during this time.  After World War II ended, he returned to Korea and combined his traditional Korean training with the Chinese martial arts to create Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1945.
